Austria has a deep Catholic heritage, though much of that identity is now cultural or nominal. Secularization continues to grow, and many are distancing themselves from the church because of taxation, scandal, and disillusionment. Yet spiritual longing remains as materialism and activism leave many dissatisfied. Evangelical churches are small but legally recognized, creating meaningful opportunities for faithful Gospel witness.

Austria is a nation of beauty, history, and deep spiritual need. While many Austrians remain connected to Catholic tradition, fewer are actively engaged in church life, and secular values increasingly shape the culture. GEM partners with local evangelical churches, especially through the Union of Evangelical Churches, to support discipleship, church planting, recovery ministry, and outreach among immigrant communities.

Through long-term relationships and local church partnerships, missionaries are helping strengthen believers, develop leaders, and create new pathways for Gospel-centered ministry in a changing spiritual landscape.
