Journey to the field

Learn the six-stage journey of serving in Europe with GEM.

Stage 1

In this stage you will complete a background check, obtain references, and fill out some application materials to help us get to know you better. This stage is like a "handshake" for us to meet and become more acquainted.

Stage 2

After your application is processed and approved, you will receive a GEM conditional offer. If you accept the conditional offer, you will become a Candidate for missionary service, moving you on to the wellness review.

Our GEM Wellness facilitators will send you some assessments and personality tests to fill out to help us learn more of your story.

Additionally, during this stage, you will have a conversation with your potential field leader to get to know them.

Stage 3

If you have been approved to proceed, you will be invited to attend a Discernment Retreat as part of the interview process to continue prayerfully discerning your next steps in missions. The retreat may be in-person or virtual, dependent on your sending entity and location.

You will also be sent a Birkman Method Personality Assessment and a Discernment Retreat Canvas course.

After all of these steps have been completed, a decision will be made regarding an appointment with GEM.

Stage 4

If you have received and accepted an appointment, you're now a GEM missionary! You will attend Ministry Partner Development training and an Appointment Service.

Although you’re officially now a GEM missionary, your formal employment with GEM will not start until “launching” into your new ministry context.

Stage 5

During your appointee phase, you will focus on preparing for your transition into GEM ministry by support raising, completing necessary trainings, and, if relocating, developing a plan for entering your new country.

Stage 6

Whether you are crossing an ocean, a border, or a street to join GEM field ministry, you have now arrived at your destination! This initial season in your new role will include participation in an Integration Cohort with other new workers to learn about GEM, develop relationships, and prepare for ministry, as well as fulfillment of field requirements for culture and language acquisition and training.
