Our Story
David and Majka met in Bratislava in the fall of 1999 at a campus ministry outreach. Months before, David moved there to pioneer a sports ministry with a Slovak friend. After twelve years of working in this ministry, David handed off the leadership to his Slovak friend. Majka is from Slovakia and grew up during the difficult years of communism. A strong witness for her at this time was watching her grandparents smuggle Christian literature, host family and friends in their home, and love on their guests with acts of kindness. Majka believes the foundation for her to follow the calling she now has with David was developed during these early years of spending time with her family. Where We Will Work
The Phillips family is excited to join GEM and their work in Europe. David, Majka and their three daughters will live in Vienna, Austria. One of their main ministry focuses will be to partner with an Austrian couple that has been pioneering an international student ministry with their local church. The opportunity for David and Majka to serve alongside this couple and share the message of Christ's love and forgiveness with many of the 14,000 international students who study in Vienna complements nicely the years (2012-2021) they spent developing an international student ministry in Northern Colorado. GEM leadership has also asked David and Majka to partner with a ministry in nearby Bratislava, Slovakia that is doing community development. It is their prayer that the Slovaks involved in this ministry will join them as they trust God with a dream of growing a Christ-centered community.
