I Have Prayed
Turkey
Turkey Capital: Ankara
Border Countries: Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Greece, Bulgaria
Turkey is a beautiful country made even more delightful with its generous, welcoming people. Hospitality is a deeply rooted value in the Turkish culture. Islam is also deeply rooted there—so much so that a large population of Turks see Islam as a cultural tradition in addition to a religious belief. While Turkey is officially a secular country, evangelicals are sometimes discriminated against or harassed. The number of people who follow Christ totals far less than one percent; more than 99 percent claim Islam. The Turks remain the largest unreached people group in the world.

Turkey is no stranger to the Gospel; the apostle Paul ministered there and brought the hope of Christ to a people entrenched in pagan practices. This serves as a reminder that God can once again transform this land and its people with His love. Though the number of Turks who follow Christ is small, Christians are sharing their faith and God is building His church. In response to pressure from the European Union, the government now recognizes some Turkish Protestant churches and increasingly sees Turkey as multi-religious. Thus, the door is open further for the Gospel to enter and thrive.
Turkey remains largely untouched by the Gospel and is a key place for missionaries to serve. Many Christians recognize that God is preparing the way for exponential growth in the Turkish evangelical church. In 2007 three believers were killed, and this brought media attention to Turkey’s intolerance for Protestants. Nevertheless, Christ-followers understand that martyrdom is often the seed of the church. In the political realm, the battle between Muslim conservatives and secular politicians makes this a strategic time for believers to live out their faith in Turkey. North Americans can partner with Turkish Christians by providing encouragement and support.
  1. Pray that God’s Spirit will break down cultural barriers so Muslims will be willing to consider Christ’s claims.
  2. Pray for government officials to look favorably upon Christ-followers in Turkey so Christians will have freedom to share about Jesus.
  3. Pray that believers in Turkey will boldly and lovingly demonstrate who Jesus is to those who haven’t experienced Christianity in positive ways.
  4. Pray that God will call His people to creatively serve among Turks in both Turkey and Europe, where many immigrants now live.
