Turkey is no stranger to the Gospel; the apostle Paul ministered there and brought the hope of Christ to a people entrenched in pagan practices. This serves as a reminder that God can once again transform this land and its people with His love. Though the number of Turks who follow Christ is small, Christians are sharing their faith and God is building His church. In response to pressure from the European Union, the government now recognizes some Turkish Protestant churches and increasingly sees Turkey as multi-religious. Thus, the door is open further for the Gospel to enter and thrive.
Turkey remains largely untouched by the Gospel and is a key place for missionaries to serve. Many Christians recognize that God is preparing the way for exponential growth in the Turkish evangelical church. In 2007 three believers were killed, and this brought media attention to Turkey’s intolerance for Protestants. Nevertheless, Christ-followers understand that martyrdom is often the seed of the church. In the political realm, the battle between Muslim conservatives and secular politicians makes this a strategic time for believers to live out their faith in Turkey. North Americans can partner with Turkish Christians by providing encouragement and support.
