This country in northeastern Europe has claimed Lutheranism since the Reformation. Yet, after Latvia declared independence from Soviet rule in 1991, the newfound religious freedom quickly faded to nominal faith. Unlike many Western Europeans who have given up on the Christian Church, Latvians are spiritual people who want God to be a part of their future. Rural Latvians face the social challenges of poverty and alcoholism, and urban Latvians encounter materialism and secularism. Also, a cultural clash exists between Latvians and ethnic Russians, who make up 30 percent of the population.

Latvians are spiritually minded people, proud of their Lutheran heritage and open to spiritual things. This spiritual openness provides fertile soil for the Gospel that is finding its way into the hearts of some young Latvians. Latvian Christians and missionaries are praying that God's transformational power would take deep root in the hearts and minds of Christ-followers who may have bought into a watered-down and comfortable faith. The great hope for Latvia is that God does not abandon the work that He has begun.
The Latvian Church needs renewal. Evangelical Christians have requested help from missionaries to plant relevant, Bible-teaching churches. Also, staff at a Latvian Bible schoola key means of equipping Latvians for ministryhave asked for Bible professors. Evangelical parachurch organizations are doing a good work in Latvia, but more people are needed to partner with these groups to reach Latvians. Young people respond well to creative, fun outreach such as Christian camps.
  1. Pray for a new generation of well equipped church leaders to emerge. All the evangelical denominations in Latvia need more people to prepare for ministry as pastors and church planters.
  2. Pray that new training initiatives will attract quality students.
