Moldova
 |
Capital: Chisinau Border Countries: Ukraine, Romania |
While Moldova is colorful with its medieval monasteries and fortresses, unique
underground wine caves, and spa resorts, the nation is one of Europe’s poorest.
When the country declared independence from the former Soviet Union in 1991,
living conditions declined. Many Moldovans feel disillusioned with life and even with
the church—about 90 percent of the people are Orthodox. The influence of
the Orthodox Church makes evangelical work difficult, as does the fact that many
villagers are ensnared in the occult. Though the evangelical church has grown,
believers still make up only about two percent of the population.

Moldova has become fertile ground for the Gospel, and evangelical congregations have multiplied since communism ended. Despite Moldovans’ poverty, they have a vision to reach their own people, and they have also sacrificially sent missionaries other nations. God has uniquely positioned the people of Moldova to minister in Ukraine, Russia, Turkey, and Bulgaria since each of those people groups are represented in this country, and members of each now follow Christ. Also, graduates of Moldova’s theological training school have already planted churches in Asia and Moldova. Romanians, Americans, and Moldovans partnered to start this school in 1994, modeling unity in the Body of Christ.
Hundreds of towns and villages in Moldova still have no evangelical church. Large communities of Gypsies live in this country, and they are mostly unreached. North American believers can assist the church by helping provide training for pastors and missionaries as well as Christian education for laypeople. They can also partner with churches to reach out to teens and university students through sports, camping, and other ministries. Long-term workers are needed to start house churches among the various people groups, and short-term teams could help construct or renovate church buildings since many congregations are without adequate meeting places.
- Pray that theological training schools will continue to produce mature Moldovan leaders who will reach out to their people.
- Pray that God will call Moldovan and North American missionaries to serve in Gypsy communities so Gypsies can experience Christ’s love.
- Pray that God’s Spirit will draw unreached Moldovan people to Himself and that
He will spark a house-church planting movement. Pray for unity among evangelical
denominations so believers will have a powerful witness.
