I Have Prayed
Switzerland
Switzerland Capital: Bern
Border Countries: Austria, France, Itlay, Liechtenstein, Germany
Many people think of the Alps, skiing, or a safe haven for investors when they think of Switzerland. Believers know that great reformers such as John Calvin and Huldreich Zwingli taught there in the 1500s. Despite the positive changes that took place during that time, today, just three to five percent of the people follow Christ and are involved in their faith. The Swiss government supports both Catholic and Protestant state churches, which have a combined membership of about 50 percent of the population. Free churches also exist. In recent years, more and more people have left congregations and call themselves "without confession."

In many regions of Switzerland, one can find believers sharing their faith and participating in small, vibrant home Bible studies. Swiss people across the nation have accepted Christ through believers modeling changed lives and sharing their faith one-on-one as well as through the Alpha course. Switzerland is home to some excellent Bible institutes that train young people for pastoral ministries and missionary outreaches. The country's German-speaking evangelical churches have sent out more than 1,000 missionaries. Evangelicals are praying for revival and purposefully planting churches in the many unreached communities, trusting God to renew their beautiful land for His glory.
About one third of the Swiss people ski since they live near the mountains. Because skiing and other sports are such an important part of life in Switzerland, believers can use sports as a vehicle to get to know people and model a life transformed by Christ. Believers also have an open door to share God's love through music since the Swiss have a love for music. North Americans could serve in ministries among Muslims and partner with evangelical churches to reach out in Muslim communities. About 400,000 Muslims have immigrated to Switzerland from the Balkans and Turkey during the past 15 years.
  1. Pray that God will open the eyes of Swiss people to the Gospel and spark revival in this land of the reformers.
  2. Pray that Christian churches will be increasingly faithful to Scripture.
