I Have Prayed
Slovenia
Slovenia Capital: Ljubljana
Border Countries: Austria, Hungary, Croatia,Italy
Slovenia boasts a Mediterranean climate along the coast, lush vineyards, virgin forests, snow-capped mountains, and ski resorts. Despite its communist-ruled past, Slovenia is economically strong and politically stable. Yet its spiritual vitality does not match its beauty and prosperity. Previously one of Yugoslavia's six constituent republics, present-day Slovenia became independent in 1991. In this country the size of New Jersey with two million residents, less than 1,000 are believed to be evangelical Christians. Of the 25 evangelical churches or Bible study groups in the country, most have less than 30 people and are diminishing. Almost 60 percent of Slovenes are Catholic.

For the past five years, a choir and band from California have done an outreach by presenting worship music and drama in the Slovenian language. New Hope annually tours 10 cities and presents the Gospel in each, and God has greatly used this ministry. In general, Slovenia may be on the verge of a true spiritual revival. A recent study by the Evangelical Missions Research Group showed that the growing numbers of young believers, coupled with an increasing receptivity to the claims of Christ, are good indicators. If new believers tap into their former relational networks, significant numbers of Slovenes of all ages could enter a relationship with Jesus.
Because Slovenes are hospitable people who are open to new friendships, North Americans can make a difference in this country through friendship evangelism as they live out a life redeemed by Christ. Outreach initiatives among businesspeople and professionals have proven effective, as Slovenes are interested in learning to balance careers and families. Through discipling from North Americans during short-term mission trips, believers can help meet Slovenes' professional and personal needs. Coming alongside existing evangelical groups to support them and offer leadership training and mentoring will yield great results in this country of relatively new believers.
  1. Pray that God will call more believers to serve in Slovenia so more people there can hear the Gospel.
  2. Many believers are young in their faith; pray that God will give them a desire to mature and persevere.
