I Have Prayed
Lithuania
Lithuania Capital: Vilnius
Border Countries: Latvia, Belarus, Poland, Russia (Kaliningrad)
The Lithuanian people adopted Roman Catholicism in 1387a faith that the majority of the people still claim. Yet many decades of Nazi and Soviet rule repressed Lithuanians' faith and broke their trust in authority. When the country gained full freedom from the former USSR in 1991, most people returned to their Catholic roots. Unfortunately, today only about 14 percent of Catholics are actively involved in the church. Evangelical believers make up less than two percent of the population, and many people claim no faith at all. Lithuanians are a people in need of restoration and of the hope found only in knowing Christ.

Praise God that the evangelical community has grown in the post-Soviet era, and that relationships between denominations are better than in most former Soviet states. Though many Lithuanians follow their Catholic faith nominally, younger leaders are seeking change and renewal in the church. Young people have also increasingly sought spiritual answers, and they are drawn to evangelical groups. Overall, more Lithuanians are following Christ and sharing their faithpraise God that His Spirit is renewing His Church.
Lithuania is a key place to reach out to people who are hurting: it has one of the highest suicide rates in the world. Believers from North America could partner with Lithuanians to reach out with specialized ministries. Believers could also help evangelical churches start new congregations throughout the country. Opportunities exist to reach out to expatriates; about four million young people have left the country in search of a better life since it joined the European Union (2004). Expatriates are more open to the Gospel while they are away from home. Many have moved to Poland; missionaries there could make an impact among these young people.
  1. Pray for increased renewal in Catholic churches and a focus on Christ and His Word.
  2. Pray that young expatriates will experience Christ through believers in Poland and other countries in which they are temporarily living.
