I Have Prayed
Armenia
Armenia Capital: Yerevan
Border Countries: Georgia, Azerbaijan, Iran, Turkey
The apostles Bartholomew and Thaddeus introduced Christianity in Armenia during the first century, and Armenians were the first nation to adopt Christianity as the official religion in 301 A.D. The majority of the people (almost 95 percent) are members of the Armenian Apostolic Orthodox Church, though many follow their faith nominally. During communist rule, many people gave up their faith. Even now in the post-Soviet era when military control came to an end, the church has been largely unable to re-evangelize its people. Today, most Armenians follow the philosophy of materialism. About two percent of the people profess to having personal relationship with Christ.

God is using an Armenian organization called the National Leadership Institute (NLI) to train young lay leaders, initiate Sunday Schools and youth programs, and host seminars for spiritual awakening. Young people are becoming catalysts for renewal in the church and among Armenians at home and abroad. The NLI has a vision to reach out to the 60,000 university students living and studying in Yerevan, the capital, through a non-smoking caf. God has also used the Alpha course in Armenia; dozens of people have come to Christ through courses geared to young adults, artists, students, youth, and the disabled.
Armenian Christians know that, without partnership from believers in other countries, they can't repair the spiritual damage done during 70 years of restrictive Soviet rule. North Americans could serve alongside Armenians in evangelism, biblical education, and discipleship. One project in which North Americans could partner is the Praise Studio, founded by several young Christian artists. Their purpose is to praise God through art, including their own works, and be a witness to other young artists. Another project is to develop a Christian caf. People who have experience in conducting an art ministry or helping run a caf could make an eternal impact in Armenia.
  1. Pray that God will give Armenian believers wisdom, courage, and creativity to reach out to their people.
  2. Pray that God will continue to use evangelical parachurch organizations to fill the gap between society and the church.
