I Have Prayed
Croatia
Croatia Capital: Zegreb
Border Countries: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Hungary, Serbia, Montenegro, Slovenia
Croatians are friendly and welcoming, taking time to stop, talk, and drink coffee together. But life has not always been so pleasant in this area, and most Croatians still remember vividly the war that ravaged their homes in 1991 when Croatia declared its independence from the former Yugoslavia. For eight years unrest and violence reigned and thousands of people were displaced. Old animosities among ethnic groups were rekindled, and a new sense of ethnic identity became more pronounced. For Croatians this identity is closely intertwined with Roman Catholicism, even though many of them follow that faith nominally. Just 0.22 percent of the people have a relationship with Christ.

Since the end of the war, a new semblance of order is returning to the region. Although there are still reminders that the war is not far in the past, ethnic tensions have decreased. God is working among and through the believers in Croatia, and Greater Europe Mission serves alongside them to help reach their nation with the Gospel. One of the effective ministries is the Theological Biblical Academy, where Croatians receive pastoral training. Also, several missions groups in Croatia partner to reach the common goal of seeing Croatians come to faith in Christ.
The Croatian government hopes to enter the European Union soon, and this is a hot political issue. This tiny country is trying to progress at the pace of the rest of the world and to have an impact where it can. As Croats increasingly find that materialism and politics don't fill the void they feel inside, believers have an opportunity to show and tell them about Christ. Croatian church planters have asked for individuals and families to come alongside them as they seek to multiply the number of congregations in their country. Ministry possibilities also exist at Zelena Dolina, a Christian camp.
  1. Pray that Christians will have a healthy respect for one another and that unity will grow across denominational lines.
  2. Pray for a release from bondage to tradition that holds Croatians back from worshipping the true God.
