I Have Prayed
Malta
Malta Capital: Valletta
Border Countries:
Malta is a beautiful nation made up of three small islands in the Mediterranean Sea south of Sicily. With more than 400,000 residents, the country is the most densely populated in the European Union. Malta has a long history, evidenced by its prehistoric temples, catacombs, and WWII bomb shelters. Christianity has maintained strong roots in Malta since the apostle Paul’s shipwreck there, and the Maltese are traditionally and culturally Roman Catholic. Though 98 percent of the population is affiliated with that church, only about half attends Mass regularly. Many Maltese know who Jesus is, but very few have made Him their personal Savior.

Many Maltese see the evangelical church as a sect, so individuals face stress and relational tension when they decide to join a fellowship. But recently, consistent ministry efforts and the changing culture have created more awareness of the evangelical church. People have started to follow Jesus after getting to know Christ followers, exploring spiritual questions, and reading the Bible. With the start of the Evangelical Alliance in 2008, there is new hope for the evangelical community to cooperate and speak with one voice. God is doing a new work in Malta, and Christians attribute it to the prayers of people around the world.
Continued spiritual transformation among the Maltese will depend on the development of faithful, creative leaders. With the economy becoming more technology based—and headed toward being a Mediterranean hub for technology and media industries—believers need to recognize and respond to related ministry opportunities. People interested in doing outreach through technology have a great opportunity to plug into this forming community. Youth ministry in Malta also has room to grow, especially within subcultures. North Americans could explore serving among gamers, footballers, skaters, musicians, and artists. Anyone can get involved now by praying for a specific Maltese town or village. (At www.praymalta.org, click “Village Project.”)
  1. Pray that the Evangelical Alliance will become more spiritually healthy so people will be drawn to Christ.
  2. Pray that God will raise up leaders within evangelical churches who are willing to reach out.
  3. Pray that believers will have insight to creatively engage the changing culture.
  4. Pray for the start of a campus ministry at the University of Malta.
  5. Pray that God will call new missionaries to work in knowledge-based industries and among youth.
