I Have Prayed
Liechtenstein
Liechtenstein Capital: Vaduz
Border Countries: Austria, Switzerland
Liechtenstein, a mountainous enclave on the Rhine River, is about the size of Washington, D.C. More than a third of the 34,000 residents are foreigners, mainly Swiss, Austrians, and Germans. While the country was poor until WWII, today the standard of living surpasses that of the United States. The Roman Catholic Church is the official church, and nearly 80 percent of the population is affiliated with it. The Reformation never reached Liechtenstein, and to this day most of the people there have not been confronted with the necessity of having a personal relationship with Christ. Less than two percent of Liechtensteiners follow Jesus.

Praise the Lord that Liechtenstein has evolved from a feudal backwater in the 1930s to a leading banking and industrial center. Because of this, the people of Liechtenstein have the opportunity to hear and consider the claims of Christ though expatriates and others, including tourists. In 1985, the first and only evangelical church was started in this country following an evangelistic campaign that British, Norwegian, and Swiss believers launched. The congregation is made up mostly of immigrants. What a blessing it is to have a light for Christ in the community, even though it is small.
Close to half of the people in Liechtenstein are members of a sports association. Sports could be an open door for believers to build relationships with nonbelievers and eventually share about Christ. Another opportunity exists among businesspeople, as Liechtenstein is one of the most industrialized countries in the world. Because many businesses are global market leaders, specialized in research intensive market niches, to reach these people with Christ’s love is an opportunity to touch the world. This is also the case because of the country’s Muslim population (3.5 percent of the people), most of whom are immigrants from Turkey.
  1. Pray that believers from other countries who do business with Liechtensteiners will openly share their faith.
  2. Pray that those who are caught up in materialism will understand their need for a relationship with Christ.
  3. Pray that believers will reach out to members of the Muslim community with love, and that God’s Spirit will move among Muslims.
  4. Pray that God will call believers to serve in outreach and evangelism in Liechtenstein.
