I Have Prayed
Estonia
Estonia Capital: Tallinn
Border Countries: Russia, Latvia
The Estonian people have known freedom for little of their history. Danes, Swedes, Germans, and Russians ruled the small country for centuries, then communists took over until 1991. Only since 1994, when Russian troops left, has the country been free to become modernized. Though the country has historically been affiliated with the Lutheran Church, a recent poll showed that Estonians are not religious people. More than a quarter don't believe there is a god, spirit, or life force; 54 percent believe there is some spiritual force. About 13 percent are affiliated with the Estonian Orthodox Church, which often vocally opposes evangelical Christianity.

God is moving through Estonian churches' assertive evangelistic efforts. They often use music as a tool to draw people to events where believers play Christian music and videos and present the Gospel. As a result, Estonians have expressed interest in Jesus and talked with Christians about faith. North American TEFL outreaches have also helped local believers build relationships with Estonians. English classes break down walls that Estonians often have toward people outside the Orthodox or Lutheran churches. Many who have attended TEFL programs willingly accept invitations to the evangelistic Alpha course. Additionally, one evangelical church is in the process of planting a church.
Evangelical churches in Estonia are hungry for spiritual help, and they welcome prayer support and encouragement from individuals and sister churches in North America. Short-term teams can also be an excellent source of support for churches by helping with building projects and TEFL training. Through these, Estonian believers build relationships with nonbelievers, and sometimes North Americans have opportunities to share how their faith in Christ brings them though trials. A church planter in the capital of Tallinn, where a third of the population lives, would welcome a missionary colleague to help in the challenging work of starting a church.
  1. Pray that God will create a hunger in the hearts of Estonian people to know Him rather than being caught up in materialism.
  2. Pray that God would inspire evangelical pastors to find creative ways to reach people.
