I Have Prayed
Serbia
Serbia Capital: Belgrade
Border Countries: Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Albania, Macedonia, Montenegro, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovia
A part of Yugoslavia until 2003, Serbia is now a sovereign nation landlocked in the heart of the Balkan Peninsula. In modern times the countries formerly comprising Yugoslavia have experienced shifting borders and governments, some peaceful and some not. This instability has had an impact on the economy, culture, and ethnic relationships within Serbia. Serbia's shifting landscape creates both challenges and opportunities for spreading the Gospel within its regions. One challenge is that Serbians equate faith with nationality. If you are Serbian, you are Orthodox. Citizenship is synonymous with membership in the Orthodox Church. This can create mistrust and prejudice toward those who share the Gospel. Non-Orthodox faith is often regarded as a sect. Historical conditioning is largely responsible for this: Serbians instinctively mistrust outsiders. Trust must be won for a fair hearing of the Gospel.

Amidst changing borders, territorial disputes, and struggling economies, the cross of Christ offers hope and stability. Not immediate, temporal, or political relief, but the relief that comes from a life of significance lived out in the hope of the Kingdom of God. Western visitors are often surprised by the warmth and friendliness of the Serbs. This warmth, coupled with the redemptive love of Jesus, can create churches that will have a transformational and lasting impact on the cultural landscape of Serbia.
As Serbia continues to rebuild and recover from the wars of the past century, it offers many opportunities to positively affect the local economy. Opportunities exist in camping, sports, social outreach, business, and training. North American believers can make an impact in these areas by coming alongside the Serbians. God is at work in Serbia in unique and meaningful ways. Perhaps your skills could be used there as well.
  1. Pray for the Gospel to make inroads in the capital, Belgrade, and in central and southern Serbia.
  2. Pray for the youth of Serbia, who easily fall prey to drugs and other social ills. GEM partners with other organizations in Serbia to focus on working with young teens via camping ministry; pray that God will use camp to continue to reach youth.
