I Have Prayed
Hungary
Hungary Capital: Budapest
Border Countries: Slovakia, Ukraine, Romania, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, Austria
Hungary has been occupied by several European nations, but the people have maintained their unique language and culture. Today, many professionals are leaving the country in search of better pay and a better life. The economy is in poor condition since Hungary entered the European Union, and the taxation rate is such that people can't survive without multiple jobs. Hungarians have little hope for the future, which is illustrated by the country's reputation as a world leader in depression and suicide. Nearly seven percent of the people struggle with alcoholism. More than 60 percent of Hungarians are Roman Catholic (most nominally), and only three percent are evangelical. Most believe that the traditional church has nothing to offer.

Although overall church growth is flat across the country, there are pockets of brightness. Two mainline, evangelical denominations have experienced success in starting new churches; more than 20 churches were planted last year. Evangelical groups have also reached out to communities by using the Alpha course, an introduction to Christianity. There is hope that this material may also break down barriers of suspicion and negativity between evangelicals. God is working in Hungarian hearts, and believers anticipate that one day, revival will spread through Hungaryand through Hungarians to the rest of the world!
Hungarians are looking for someone or something in which to put their faith. Often, seekers and new believers can't find an evangelical church in their neighborhood that is relevant or is equipped to teach the truth and disciple them. That's where the rest of the Body of Christ comes in. Hungarian pastors and lay leaders need mentors to equip them with skills and vision to move beyond traditional ministry methods. Also, church-planting teams are needed to live among the Hungarian people to start churches that are based in the reality of a transformed life. Ministry among students and young professionals could make a great impact as well.
  1. Pray for Hungarian leaders who form public opinionthat a spirit of unity and hope would prevail over the current spirit of defeat.
  2. Pray for spiritual renewal in churches so the vision to reach out to Hungarians and the world will be an unquenchable fire.
