I Have Prayed
Albania
Albania Capital: Tirana
Border Countries: Montenegro, Serbia, Macedonia, Greece
Albania has a troubled history, most recently 45 years of harsh, isolationist communist rule. That ended in 1991, but it left the Albanian people suspicious of each other and outsiders. The country still struggles to enter the developing world, partly because of the high level of corruption, including drug and human trafficking, that dominates the economy. In the past 10 years the people have experienced anarchy and povertyAlbania is the poorest country in Europe and has at least 50 percent unemployment. Almost every young person in the country has a goal of emigrating. The materialistic belief that things provide security is strong and growing, and often leads young people into lives of crime.

Seventeen years ago the light entered the darkness in Albania, and the evangelical church has grown from zero believers to about 25,000. Christian literature and books are being translated and published, helping new believers grow in their faith. God is using tools like the "JESUS" film to bring people to Christ: recently, Albanians and North Americans partnered to do outreach in remote villages, and 100 people responded to the Gospel. The infant church is developing a missions mindset. Evangelical congregations have trained and sent short-term missionaries to surrounding nations, recognizing the strategic impact Albanians can have in countries that are closed to Westerners.
Albanians are very open to the Gospel, and North Americans can make an impact because the country is currently looking west for its future. Albanian Christians have asked for people to come and live among them to teach the Bible to their people, especially to the children. Villagers in many parts of the country are waiting for someone to lead them in the ways of truth. People are also needed to partner with existing Albanian churches to help them plant more churches. This involves mentoring, encouraging, and modeling church-multiplication ministry.
  1. Pray that Albanian believers will grow in love and wisdom so they can effectively share their faith.
  2. Pray that Christian businessmen will run their businesses in godly ways, being salt and light in their communities.
