I Have Prayed
Greece
Greece Capital: Athens
Border Countries: Albania, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Turkey
The Greek people have contributed to Western culture in art, food, and literature. They are proud of their rich heritage as well as of their religion; most belong to the Greek Orthodox Church (98 percent). These people claim a staunch commitment to their church even though only about two percent attend services regularly. They firmly believe in the necessity of receiving the sacraments- especially at baptism and marriage- through the church. About .02 percent of the people follow Christ. The extremely slow evangelical growth is surprising since Greece was never under communism, especially because the first evangelical missionary began serving there more than 150 years ago.

While church growth in Greece is small, God is working. Two major denominations have especially found success, and people are starting to follow Christ. One area of effective ministry is among youth. A group in Athens meets every other week for worship with a contemporary band, and they learn about missions, commitment to God, and giving. Greek leaders and missionaries are making an effort to encourage the young people, especially those who take part in missionsoften against their parents' wishes. Greece is home to many immigrants and refugees who have also responded in large numbers to the Gospel message.
Though the Greek people may be compared to the Jews in terms of their resistance to the Gospel, missionaries can make a great impact by serving alongside Greek church leaders. Opportunities are open in technical support, music ministry, and leader mentoring. Outreach to youth is effective since youth are more open and can influence their families. Work among refugees is a growing, productive ministry; many from the Middle East who are on their way West become stuck in Greece. This is a great point for missionaries to touch these people in their time of need with God's love and the Good News of Jesus.
  1. Pray that God's Spirit will move among nonbelievers so they will receive the Gospel message with humility.
  2. Many parents discourage their children from doing ministry careers; pray that young people will trust God to provide.
